What Asthma Patients is Steroids Prescribed?

Steroids are the family of chemicals which are synthesized naturally in the body. These are responsible for regulating the body’s growth and function. Steroids can be either inhaled or swallowed.

Steroids are basically prescribed to those asthma patients who have severe or chronic asthma. Usually people having asthma, which has become difficult to be controlled by other means are prescribed these steroids. These have been quite effective for the treatment for the severe attack of asthma. These are basically prescribed to the patient for a short course. This period can be 3-4 days or 2-3 weeks. Once the condition of the patient gets better or other treatments keep the situation under control, steroids are stopped. In fact doctors do not prescribe steroids for longer periods except in the cases where it is quite difficult to control asthma.

In fact the dose of the steroids also varies depending upon the severity of asthma and the individual’s sensitivity. A dose less than 20 mg of prednisone as a low dose, 20 to 30 mg a moderate dose and 40 to 60 mg a high dose. Thus, you need to consult the doctor to ensure that you are taking the right amount of dosage.
