WHAT DO THE RESULTS OF SPIROMETRY SHOW? |
Spirometry can show if you have any obstruction or blockage in your airways. Well this is a clear symptom of asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) or any other obstructive lung function. Also spirometry test results show smaller than normal lungs i.e. any kind of restriction. This would be a sign of impending heart failure, damage or scarring of the lung tissues, or any other restrictive lung condition. In spirometry test, you are first checked with spirometer then the person is given a dose of albuterol, wait for 15 minutes, and then the spirometery is repeated, this gives the increase in air volume you inhaled and the percentage improvement over the baseline. The values of FEV1 obtained from the spirometry test are compared against the normal range of expected values based on age, gender and height. 80 to 100% of projected values for FEV1 show the good control, 60 to 79% shows the poor control and below 60% shows the severe condition. Spirometry is the most basic and frequently performed test of pulmonary i.e. lung function. Spirometer is used to measure how much air the lungs can hold and how well the respiratory system is able to inhale and exhale air from the lungs. It also verifies if you asthma or a lung disorder and your lung capacity. |
