Inhaled Corticosteroids which is one of the asthma medications has both local adverse effects (In one part of the body) and systematic effects (throughout the body). These effects include poor growth, decreased bone density, disseminated varicella infection, easy bruising, cataracts, glaucoma, and adrenal gland suppression. With the increasing dose of inhaled steroids the risk increases.

Side effects from short acting beta agonists like albuterol is although not experienced by most patients yet proper care is required while taking this medicine. Long acting beta agonists involve a risk of increasing severity of asthma exacerbations and risk of fatal asthma episodes.

Oral steroids like prednisone have side effects similar to those for inhaled steroids. Side effects from montelukast and other leukotriene modifiers are although well tolerated but need care if the effect increases considerably. The side effects include stomach upset, headache, liver test abnormalities, skin rashes etc. Other medications like Xolair develops viral illness, sinusitis, sore throat, headache, respiratory infections and Cromolyn and nedocromil causes bad taste, itching, sneezing, and cough.
