Researchers say that this test could be used upfront for all patients complaining of chronic cough, saving significant time and expense in other testing. In the exhaled nitric oxide test, the patient breathes into an analyzer four to five times over a time period of 10 minutes. A mouthpiece will be placed in your mouth, you will be asked to deep breathe and fill your lungs, next slowly blow the air out of your lungs. This measures the inflammation in the lung’s bronchial tubes. Patients with a positive or abnormal exhaled nitric oxide test had a strong likelihood of response to inhaled corticosteroids and a negative or normal exhaled nitric oxide test excluded response to the medication.

Nitric oxide test is the simplest test to measure the amount of nitric oxide in your lungs. Nitric oxide is one of those many gases which people exhales and causes inflammation of airways. This test is performed in the Pediatric or Adult Clinics.
