What is Exercise Induced Asthma?

Exercise induced Asthma can be defined as the inflammation as well as constriction of the airways after performing exercises or workout. The symptoms of exercise induced asthma may vary from person to person. Generally those exercises which require a lot of activity for longer periods of time or those performed in a cold environment are known to cause exercise-induced asthma.

Exercise is believed to be one of the major reasons for triggering an asthma attack. This can also induce an attack even if the person might not experience an attack due to other causes. Research has established that the people suffering from exercise induced asthma are more sensitive to alterations in temperature as well as humidity.

While the person is at rest, he inhales through his nose and as such the air becomes warms, humidifies as well as gets clean. But when the person is exercising, we breathe through the mouth and as such the air entering the lungs is cold and dry.  Thus the difference between the warm air in the lungs as well as the cold inhaled air results to an exercise induced asthma attack. After the triggering of the attack, the airways start swelling and a lot of mucus is produced.
