How is Juvenile Asthma Diagnosed?

Prior to the diagnosis of Juvenile Asthma, your doctor will consider the nature and frequency of the symptoms as well as the results from the tests to rule out the possibilities of other diseases. You would require giving your doctor a description of the symptoms as well as family history of asthma or allergic diseases including eczema, hives or allergic rhitnis (hay fever).

Children whose age is 6 years or above, are diagnosed asthma with the same tests which are used to make out the possibility of the disease in adults. Spirometry test is a type of lung function test which is done to measure the amount of air that can be exhaled.  Pulmonary function tests as well as allergy tests are also conducted.

In case of younger children, diagnosis is difficult since the lung function tests are not considered reliable. As such you would have to give detailed information to your doctor regarding the symptom type as well as the frequency. This may take a long time.

However early diagnosis and treatment can be quite beneficial for your child. This will not interrupt with your child’s daily activities like sleep, play, sports and school.
