Do children get asthma?

Asthma is a respiratory disorder which is responsible for causing coughing, wheezing, tightness of the chest and breathlessness. These symptoms are prevalent in around 1 out of 10 children. These symptoms are caused as a result of the inflammation of the airways and are often triggered off by an allergy or a virus.

It has been found out that around half of the children who suffer from asthma grow out of it but in some cases if the asthma is not treated then this may damage their airways permanently. In children, sometimes the airways become irritated and inflamed. This leads to the development of asthmatic symptoms. Peak flow meter is used for the diagnosis of asthma.

According to studies, it has been found out that the boys have a tendency to get asthmatic symptoms as compared to girls at a larger rate. Besides, black children are more prone to getting this problem in comparison to white children. Asthma can also be hereditary. Children can inherit allergies and may develop asthma. Most of the children suffering from eczema also have asthmatic symptoms.

Hence parents suspecting their children of this problem should immediately consult the doctor and seek the necessary advice.
