How is asthma diagnosed?

Asthma is one of the most common diseases, which affects thousands of people every year. Asthma is diagnosed by physical examination. It is also crucial if you have a family history of asthma and allergies.  Some of the pulmonary function tests like spirometry and peak-flow measurements are conducted for the diagnosis of asthma.

Patients suffering from asthma have restricted airways. Due to this the patient finds it difficult to exhale. The spirometry test measures the volume of air while exhaling. In case the volume of air exhaled is less than 80% of the net lung capacity in one second then asthma or COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) might be present.

Peak expiratory flow rate is another method to diagnose asthma. This test is carried out to check the volume of air the patient can exhale. This device is user friendly and the patient does not require any help while using it.

Apart from these certain skin tests or blood tests might also be conducted for this purpose. As such additional allergies might also get diagnosed even if the person is not suffering from asthma but other type of breathing problems. So what are you waiting for?
