How is Asthma in Children Diagnosed?

The diagnosis of asthma in children is similar to that in an adult. However, here the doctor would take care of the symptoms as well as of the family history of the particular condition and the allergies. These symptoms are often coughing or wheezing, shortness of breath and tightness or congestion in the chest. Children may also undergo fatigue during any physical exercise.

Lung function test may be performed by the doctor which is also termed as spirometry. In this test, the quantity and speed of the air exhaled from the child’s lings is measured. The information thus obtained is compared to the lung function of an “average” child of the same sex, age, height and weight.

Exercise stress test is another test which is performed. This test gives a clearer picture of the health of the child’s lungs. In this, your child would be asked to inhale medicated mist and then a third reading is conducted to measure the effect medicine has on airways.

Allergy test is quite common and gives an idea to the doctor if your child is sensitive to specific allergens. This is particularly important since it gives a clearer idea to the doctor since it is difficult to diagnose asthma.
